Using photoshop to express my vision

Vision and reality can sometimes be two different things. The other night we had a raging snowstorm and I looked outside and saw this tree. The scene in my mind's eye didn't equate to what the tree actually looked like. So just for fun I've posted a beautiful little picture of the tree in the snowstorm and I've also included the original photograph that came straight out of the camera. I didn't do a whole lot of work in photoshop; changed the color balance, added a crop and added some contrast. But it is a nice example of how I use photoshop in my studio. It's very simple adjustments that sometimes can make the biggest difference. As an artist, what I really want is for the viewer to appreciate my vision. After all, would you have thought the tree in the snowstorm outside looked any different if I hadn't shown you the original image? — Sean

Colorado Springs Independent's Annual Manual

Last week I was assigned by the Colorado Springs Independent to photograph the cover of their Annual Manual, a visitors guide for Colorado Springs. This year's emphasis is on the arts in Colorado Springs and so we teamed up with professional dancers from the Ormao Dance Company and photographed at sunrise at the Garden of the Gods. I haven't seen the cover yet, but the images we made were a lot of fun. Here's Kim, a beautiful dancer, on the rocks at the Garden. Stay tuned for this year's publication coming out with the regular Independent on Thursday. — Sean

Jacob's Birth Story

Jacob was born March 3, 2010 at our home in Colorado Springs. A homebirth is not for everyone, but it can be a wonderful experience. Laura Luckett, the best midwife in Colorado Springs, helped deliver all three of our children at home. One nice thing about Jacob's birth was that Abby and Harper were welcome participants showing concern and helping out where they could. Click here to see a brief slide show of Jacob's arrival. And thank you Laura for helping to make the experience so rewarding for everyone! — Sean

Bella's Float Wraps

Bella's float wraps arrived and they look fantastic. This is a brand new way to present pictures and we're getting a lot of compliments on the samples displayed in the studio. Each image literally "floats" off the wall and several pictures can be arranged side-by-side to make a cool story board or one picture can be printed on several panels to create a mosaic. — Sean

Abbey and Paul's Garden of the Gods Engagement Sitting

I photographed Abbey and Paul's engagement sitting last Saturday at the Garden of the Gods. Abbey and Paul live in Dallas and are planning a June destination wedding at the Broadmoor Hotel. They visited the Springs to finalize their wedding day details and as Paul put it "We want to make sure we have some engagement pictures with a Colorado backdrop." It was a perfect spring afternoon for it:) Maggie of Celebrations by Maggie is helping to coordinate their wedding day.Click here to see a slide show of Abby and Paul's Garden of the Gods Engagement Sitting. And thank you Abbey and Paul I can't wait for your wedding day!— Sean

Portrait of an Artist — Charles Rockey

On Monday I visited an old friend. Charles Rockey is a painter and lives in Manitou Springs. "Rockey," as he is affectionately known is synonymous with Manitou. He's an incredible painter who regularly loans his work to friends. I first met Rockey in 2000 and photographed him. One of my all time favorites portraits shows Rockey with his dog Puppy. (It's on my Facebook page) I hadn't seen Rockey again until yesterday when I photographed him on assignment for the Colorado Springs Independent. Rockey's studio on main street displays a lifetime of imagination at work. After the shoot, Rockey invited me to lunch and we spent some time catching up. It was a joy to see him and I'm really looking forward to showing him the pictures. — Sean

Our newest billboard - Evolutionary Wedding Photography

The folks at Lamar Advertising set us up again with another billboard. This time it's on 21st street heading towards the Broadmoor Hotel. I used a fun picture made during Meghan and Michael's wedding at the Denver Botanic Gardens and included the term "Evolutionary Wedding Photography." Several people remarked to us about the billboard already. I think it's fun, unusual and eye-catching. If you have a chance, check it out! Also, click here to see a slide show of Meghan and Michael's wedding.
